Located on Maui's northwest shore, the pristine Kapalua Resort stretches from emerald mountain peaks to the edge of the glistening Pacific Ocean. Kapalua features two world-class Maui golf courses as well as award-winning accommodations and premier Maui real estate. Kapalua is also home to the PGA Tour's yearly season opener, the SBS Championship, as well as the Kapalua LPGA Classic.
Kapalua's jewel is the Plantation Course designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. This course is not only long at 7,411 yards from the tournament tees but it is sprawling as it winds its way through more than 750 acres of some of Kapalua's most incredible topography. The views here are almost indescribable and the golf holes are spectacular. The features here like the course itself are big… very big. The fairways are wide, some as much as 80 yards and the greens are also extremely large and very challenging … even for the best players in the world, as last year they were ranked as the number one most difficult set of greens to putt on the PGA Tour. Our favorite hole is the 663 yard par 5 18th, which is one of the best finishing holes on Tour. The holes play downhill and normally downwind all the way … and can be reached in two by long hitters.
The Bay Course at Kapalua is the older of the two current Kapalua Resort courses, Kapalua's original golf course. The Bay Course was designed by Arnold Palmer and Francis Duane and it opened in 1975. The Bay Course at Kapalua is resort golf in Hawaii at its best. The Bay Course features striking contrast to the sweeping vistas and constantly changing elevations of the nearby Kapalua Plantation Course. At just over 6,600 yards the course is fairly short but that doesn't mean it is easy. In fact before the Plantation Course was developed, The Bay Course was the home of the PGA Tour's nationally televised Kapalua International. This course is very user friendly for the average golfer, is beautifully landscaped and takes you through the heart of the Kapalua Resort. Without a doubt the signature hole is the stunning par 3 5th, which requires a precise shot over Oneloa Bay and the crashing Pacific surf below. Regardless of how you play you will always find drama here… and don't forget your camera. The Bay Course typifies what many golfers expect to find in a Hawaii golf experience
Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., the Makena Golf Course opened in 1993 to rave reviews. Today, this spectacular layout continues to reaffirm its reputation as one of Maui’s most spectacular golf gems. The Makena Golf Course feels more like a nature walk than a golf course, with captivating mountain views of Haleakala Crater and sweeping views of the blue Pacific Ocean. Hawaiian rock walls are constant reminders of the Hawaii of
yesteryear, and natural gullies and stream beds have been left in their natural state. The course winds its way up the slopes of Haleakala to elevations where the views of the Pacific Ocean and islands beyond are absolutely jaw-dropping.
On the front nine the 6th hole is a unique par 4 with a fairway divided by a deep ravine offering players a couple of different options. The 7th is a beautiful short par 3 played to a wide but shallow green with the magnificent West Maui Mountains as a backdrop. And the 8th is a long par 4 that plays slightly down the hill and then back up and is a hole where par is always a good score. On the back nine the 12th is a dramatic par 3 with Molokini and Koholawe in the background followed by the short downhill par 4, 13th … a hole which is actually drivable by long hitters. And the 14th is a sweeping par 5 that plays downhill all the way but is one of the longest holes in Hawaii.
Designed to be fun for practically every player, the 6,825-yard Wailea Emerald Course was one reason Golf for Women Magazine first granted the Wailea Golf Club a Top Fairways Award for the country's most women-friendly golf clubs, an honor that Wailea has won seven times. The Emerald delights players with its carpet-like fairways, colorful foliage, and numerous vistas of the Pacific Ocean and Mt. Haleakala. Relatively few forced carries and kinder fairways are ideal for players who view golf as an enjoyable form of recreation rather than a grueling test of concentration and precision. For players seeking a greater challenge, four to six tee boxes on every hole allow them to tailor the course to their skill level.
The home course of The Champions Skins Game, the 7,078-yard Wailea Gold is the most challenging of Wailea's trio, with a rugged and masterful design that takes advantage of the terrain's natural undulations. But four to six tee boxes on every hole also make it a suitable track for virtually every player. Created by architect Robert Trent Jones II, the Gold was honored by both Golf Magazine and Golf Digest as one of the country's ten best new resort courses when it opened in 1994. It has also been recognized by the Maui Historical Society for its preservation of prehistoric lava rock walls during construction, and hailed as one of the world's best designed courses by the readers of Conde Nast Traveler in the magazine's first golf resorts poll.
Called a "thinking player's course," the Gold offers a true test of one's golf skills. But the most difficult hazards on it are the distracting island views. In one round, you can enjoy spectacular vistas of the ocean, Molokini islet, ancient lava rock walls, coconut trees and sparkling white bunkers.
Old Blue is located at Wailea Golf Club on Maui and was designed by Arthur Jack Snyder. The original of the three Wailea golf courses, Old Blue is also the most unique. It's partly a result of the more traditional design style, plus its setting away from the Gold and Emerald, both of which were designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and opened in 1994. Old Blue opened in 1972 as one of the first developments in 1,500-acre Wailea. Old Blue arrived long before the oceanside hotels, houses and shopping center that all started to be built in the 1990s. Even though Wailea's top events generally opt for the next door Gold Course these days, Old Blue had its time in the spotlight, hosting the LPGA Kemper Open from 1990-92.
From an era when character defined the golf course, Wailea’s Old Blue offers up a golf experience that is truly classic. As the first thing ever built in Wailea, the Old Blue laid claim to the lay of the land that would put Wailea on everyone’s wish list of places to visit. Lush fairways lined with colorful foliage, superb course conditions and resort level service help create unforgettable lasting impressions. Meandering through the heart of one of the world’s finest resorts, the Wailea Old Blue really is - classic golf if paradise.
As the “Grand Lady of Wailea”, the Old Blue is the perfect hostess. She guides her guests on a tour of the resort while serving up views of the neighboring islands on one side and 10,023-foot dormant volcano, Mt. Haleakala on the other. While captivating with her beauty, she entertains with her classic design. Players of all levels will come away from a round on the Old Blue wanting to accept her invitation to play again. Now, after all these years, the Old Blue continues to welcome back many golfers who feel that a trip to Maui is not complete without a round or two on the Old Blue.
